Job Description:

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Public Works, the Public Works Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, inspecting and diagnosing all vehicles and equipment to include rebuilding and building parts; welding, fabricating and designing parts; and performing major restorative vehicle maintenance. Work is performed with limited supervision.

Requirements:

Must hold a heavy-duty mechanic’s license certification recognized within Manitoba.
Five (5) years’ experience as a mechanic (a combination of education and experience may be considered).
Must hold a valid Province of Manitoba Class 3 Commercial Driver’s License. Class 1 Driver’s License would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities:

Performs preventive maintenance on a variety of vehicles & equipment.
Diagnoses, repairs, cleans, adjusts and installs fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems involving repair and replacement of such parts as carburetors, fuel pumps, starter motors, distributors, generators/alternators, voltage regulators, wiring, switches, batteries, radiators, thermostats and water pumps.
Reads and interprets manuals, drawings and specifications.
Prepares oral and written reports of work performed.
Stores, maintains records and arranges for disposal of hazardous waste materials.
Orders and maintains a parts inventory, oil inventory, grease inventory, and DEF inventory for all municipal equipment.
Uses and maintains a full set of hand, power and shop tools and equipment.
Maintains municipal buildings to the best of their ability.
Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills:

Knowledge of safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
Knowledge of mathematical principles utilized in fleet maintenance activities.
Knowledge of carpentry specifically related to building maintenance would be considered an asset.
Skilled in diagnosing and repairing a wide variety of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment.
Skilled in operating and maintaining a wide variety of hand, power and specialized shop tools.

Skilled in understanding and following oral and written instructions.
Skilled in estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.

Working Conditions:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Physical strength and ability are sufficient to meet job requirements for extended periods under uncomfortable conditions in all types of weather in both an automotive shop and outdoor environment.
Employees will be required to climb ladders of various heights while performing the job functions.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs.
