Position: Custodian of Parks and Recreation Facilities
Job Type: Full-time Permanent
Hours of Work: 8-hour shifts, 40 hours per week
Department: Parks and Recreation
Reports to: Operations Supervisor

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Operations Supervisor, the staff are responsible for the day-to-day cleaning and maintenance of all municipal recreation facilities, including the Teulon-Rockwood Arena, Teulon Curling Rink, Teulon Rockwood Centennial Centre, Green Acres Park, Campground and all athletic fields.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for cleaning and custodial duties at all facilities (including emptying trash, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, cleaning glass/windows/mirrors, washing floors, walls, washroom and shower facilities, dusting/wiping hard surfaces, stocking towels, soap and other items as required, and other general custodial duties).
• Day to day ice maintenance at both the Arena and Curling Rink, including shaving, flooding, and painting of the ice, which requires operation of the ice resurfacing machine.
• Performs periodic checks of the refrigeration and boiler plants. Must accurately record, interpret and respond to gauge information
• Responsible for set up, take-down (of tables, chairs, and other equipment) and clean up for various activities held at all municipal facilities,
• Dealing with Community Groups and facility users in a professional and courteous manner.
• Responsible for opening, securing and closing facilities for users.
• Provides basic supervision of facilities at all times.
• Responsible for the security of all facilities.
• Loads and moves equipment and supplies to other locations.
• Operating a mower, string trimmer, chainsaw or other such equipment, (where trained and qualified to operate) to cut grass on boulevards and municipal grounds
• Maintaining flower gardens and shrub beds throughout the Town.
• Removal of trees and shrubs throughout the Town.
• Routine equipment and facility repairs, which require skill or knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, electrical and/or other construction-related skills.
• Other duties as assigned

Specifications and Qualifications

Education, Knowledge and Experience
Minimum Required
• Grade 12 education or the equivalent;
• Valid Province of Manitoba Driver’s Class 5 License.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
• Ability to work with user groups and the general public.
• Ability to perform assorted tasks as assigned by the Supervisor.
• Strong mechanical aptitude to conduct equipment maintenance.
• Physically fit and mentally able to perform the required tasks.
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.

Preferred
• Diploma or Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Recreation Management, Business Management or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Possess or willingness to obtain Province of Manitoba Power Engineer Refrigeration Class Certificate (Level 1 and 2).
• Experience with basic custodial work considered an asset.
• Some skill or knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical.
• Chainsaw Certification (Considered an asset upon hire. However, must have the ability to attain within one year of hire).
• Certification in WHMIS (Considered an asset upon hire. However, must have the ability to attain within one year of hire).
• Level 1 First Aid/CPR (Considered an asset upon hire. However, must have the ability to attain within one year of hire).1. Qualities

2. Comprehension and Judgment
The incumbent will exercise a high degree of independent judgment in the provision of services by the Department within the approved policies and procedures of the Town.

3. Working Conditions and Physical Demands
• The position will work a 40-hour week plus overtime as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
• This position requires the incumbent to be on call in case of an emergency, and may require working overtime and/or handle call-outs as required.
• Must have the ability to work various shifts and stand-by shifts as required.
• The position will require physical effort and include outdoor work, in a variety of conditions.
• Work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Work requires climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, and grasping.
• Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
• Hearing is required for operation of machines, and operation of motor vehicles or equipment.
• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, and noise.
